Desde marzo 15 de 2006, Wal-Mart se convirtió en el mayor accionista de CARHCO (Central American Retail Holding Company) adquiriendo el 51% de sus acciones, un 17,7% de incremento sobre el 33,3% adquirido en septiembre de 2005 de la Royal Ahold NV, de Holanda.
CARHCO se forma en una serie de fusiones con partes iguales en 2001 con 3 empresas, Corporación de Supermercados Unidos, de Costa Rica; Royal Ahold NV, de Holanda; y La Fragua, de Guatemala. Con la adquisición de la mayoría de acciones de CARHCO, la empresa se renombra a Wal-Mart Central America.
En Guatemala Wal-Mart Central America, hasta diciembre de 2007, administra la operación de 96 Despensas Familiares, 29 Tiendas Paiz, 6 Hiper Paiz, 12 Maxi Bodegas y 2 Club Co., con una fuerza laboral de 8,750 empleados.

Resistance is futile. As cliche as that may sound, this Star Trek quote popped into my head when I finished reading this post. I knew there was something creepy the last time I visited a Paiz with my mother. It was as if I had been there before- the greeter, the happy face (I think I saw it anyway), and that peculiar way Wal-Mart has of sucking its shoppers in. Gulp.
